It's never a good idea to sail Bigbury in a Westerly at low tide but other commitments gave me little choice. The wind was howling through the gap between the mainland and Burgh Island so I went for my smallest kit. Launched and was moving sideways with the strong rip trying to keep the board off the wind. Got out to the back where there were some mast high monsters bearing down, only one problem, I was in the lee of Burgh Island and up to my knees in water trying to stay upright. Gybed and sailed in but the sea state was so confused that there was nothing to ride.

Had another few attempts but was dumped unceremoniously further down wind on the beach. As soon as I got to the walls of white water I was in the lee of the Island with no power to get through.

One of the other guys trashed his sail and lost his kit, he found it later washed up on Bantham beach. I took this as an omen and decided to pack up, the last thing I want is an injury before I go to Marguerita on Wednesday.
